China’s Boar Semen Standards: Product Quality and Processing

Distinguish GB 23238-2021 from GB/T 25172-2020 and prepare a documented semen quality review.

Identify the correct document

Two Chinese national standards address different aspects of liquid boar semen. The official standards platform lists GB 23238-2021, Boar liquid semen, as a current mandatory product standard. It lists GB/T 25172-2020, Technical specification for production and preservation of fresh boar semen, as a current recommended technical specification. A recommended process specification must not be presented as the mandatory product standard.

Read the complete requirements

Obtain the applicable official text before setting release criteria. Check scope, definitions, sampling, test methods, quality requirements, labelling, storage and transport provisions. Match each numerical limit to its clause and measurement method; this overview does not reproduce a verified limits table or certify a batch.

For international supply, confirm the destination’s applicable requirements separately. A Chinese standard reference does not establish import eligibility or compliance in another country.

Prepare a quality-review file

  • Record the standard number, edition, scope and date checked.
  • Identify the batch, boar, collection date, extender, container and processing record.
  • Link each required test to the approved method, instrument, calibration or verification record and responsible operator.
  • Distinguish raw-semen measurements from extended-dose measurements and production release from end-of-shelf-life checks.
  • Record the result, unit, criterion and accept/hold/reject decision. Investigate nonconformities rather than changing the criterion after testing.

Avoid calculation and interpretation errors

Concentration is a count per unit volume; sperm number per dose also requires dose volume. A motile-sperm target additionally requires the relevant motility measurement. Do not label a concentration result as a total motile count. See the linked dose-management guide for worked arithmetic examples.

Select equipment around the method

A CASA system can support documented sperm measurements when configured and verified for the intended method. Confirm sample chambers, preparation, settings, reporting and quality checks for the selected configuration. An equipment purchase does not demonstrate compliance, and an automated report is not a substitute for the required release review.
